This is my first real attempt at painting in Photoshop with a wacom.

Suffice to say, I am glad I drew the lines out ahead of time.

The character is a blatant rip-off of Dorian "Zib" Zibowski from Tracy J. Butler's excellent webcomic "Lackadaisy," which deals with a speakeasy in Prohibition St. Louis, featuring a cast entirely consisting of cats. The titular establishment features a run-down jazz band, and who better to head it than a ultra-hip, joint-smoking black slick cat called Zib?

I like this take on Zib. I didn't see him as African American before, but this totally fits him. You got his movement and expression down perfectly.

(I don't know why, but I always saw Ivy Pepper as being African American too, even after seeing the Tracy Butler's picture of her as a Caucasian human.)

Well, Ivy's fur is black. And Zib plays jazz and smokes weed (I think). During Prohibition, if you played jazz and smoked weed, you were cool. And black.

Also, Mordecai looks Jewish, right?

Mordecai is a Jewish name, and the author said he's Jewish. And yeah, I think he looks Jewish. I've noticed that a lot of Jewish people (myself included) have heavy-lidded eyes like that. I find it cool that something that subtle made its way into Lackadaisy.

As for Ivy, I know her fur and hair color have something to do with it. Brown fur and black hair. But there's also something about her eyes that makes her seem African American to me, and I honestly don't know what it is. Maybe she just reminds me of someone I know, or someone I saw in a movie, that's just escaping my memory. I have no idea.

though tracy already did a different human version of him, I think yours it's a great alternative! I love how you kept him cartoony, and the pose it's very characteristic of Zib!

I know, but what's the point of having an imagination if you don't use it once in a while.
