Archy the Cockroach by Phostex Archy the Cockroach by Phostex
Archy: a verse libre poet reincarnated as a cockroach, from Don Marquis's Archy and Mehitabel poems. I thought it would be clever if his wings made a little suit and his segmented abdomen turned into sort of a vest.

Yes! I bought an e-book of Archy poems to read during my commute. Don Marquis is now my favorite writer, hands down. Excellent job capturing him and Mehitabel!

I have very vague memories of seeing a movie version of this when I was little.

Anyway, your sketches are really well done and expressive. Bravo!

Yup. It was a shoddily animated musical called Shinbone Alley. I still remember Mehitabel's scratchy smoker's voice and Archy's Jewish Brooklyn accent.

The poems are better. You can find them online.

I've always loved cartoon styles like this. You've managed to create expression and liveliness without making your character spastic, disturbing, and unappealing. The conversion of his wings into a coat was very clever, and works well for this sort of character. I'm particularly fond of the running pose. The exaggerated curves of his body (and his expression :D ) came out perfectly there.

I'd love to see more of him, he strikes me as very interesting.

Great work!

Thanks! I'll try to do more of Archy and Mehitabel, but the poems can be sometimes hard to illustrate.
